My Story

Have you ever felt like you had a calling?

That it was up to you?

I was a typical teenager who stank of chlorine and didn’t know too much about life.

Stay with me and I’ll share how a particularly terrible day sparked an incredible journey.

Back To Where It All Started

To paint the full picture…

My journey with swimming started out in my grandparents back yard pool.

I grew up scared of the water after I was pulled underwater by my friend Joel when I was about 6. I ended up going underwater for like 3-4 seconds (which is nothing) but I can still remember being terrified after that for quite a while.

I was an average swimmer in primary school all the way up to year 8. I did okay at breaststroke events and did some swimming club training from about 10 onwards.

I only got my confidence back once my sister was about 10 or 11. She ended up making it to state level swimming just off the couple of sessions that we would do over a 3 month stretch when our local pool was open.

When she qualified for state and our pool closed we started travelling down to albury a 260km round trip from our home town Corryong.

Not only did I get better at swimming and qualify for state.

I also became much better at all of my team sports, running and a lot more, I saw my confidence increase heaps as I made new friends.

Then an unexpected event change the course of my life.

The Rare Hail Mary That Got Caught

Remember the terrible day I mentioned?

In 2011, Our coach left.

The Corryong Swim Club was on its knees.

A Hail Mary was thrown.

I ended up coaching our club as a 15 year-old.

Yes a 15 year-old.

Now I didn’t know much about anything at all.

But the one thing I did know is that swimming can change your life in an immensely positive way.

From A Dozen To 120

I truly fell in love with problem solving the human body and optimising it to move through the water all the while trying to build meaningful relationships with swimmers sometimes a third of my age.

I took the Corryong Swimming Club in the year of 2011 with about a dozen members to nearly 120 by the end of the 2014/2015 season.

And no, I’m not Superman or Batman who saved the day.

The journey wasn’t about being a hero or saviour or anything of the sort.

It was about a passion for swimming and through genuine care a community was brought together, with many inspired.

Several years later I moved away for a few short months only to realise that I loved the area and coaching too much to leave it all behind.

I went from thinking that I needed to move to a capital city to realise my coaching dreams only to end up starting a swim school so I could spread my own bit of magic in my community Albury-Wodonga.

Why Don’t Other Swim Schools Do This?

I’ve taken my years of research, personal experiences, and expertise to create a unique approach to swimming.

SwimTech has pioneered the two-instructor approach along with low instructor:student ratios which has helped 2000+ kids improve and produced some of the best swimmers this area has ever seen.

Basics are what matters, specifically body position, if you have too much drag and no stability it doesn’t matter how hard you try you will be an ineffective swimmer.

The biggest thing though that most people forget when teaching children is that they are kids, not robots, if they aren’t enjoying themselves they won’t come back and therefore they won’t learn.

So making swimming an enjoyable experience so they stay engaged and are retained is at the very core of every action we take.

But there is one missing piece.

The Missing Piece In Our Swimming Puzzle

Want to know the missing piece?

YOU.

We couldn’t do it by ourselves.

We’ve had 500+ dedicated families who value consistency and understand the commitment that it takes for their child/ren to become strong and safe swimmers.

If you have similar values, I invite you to join our community.
